The hit musical “The Color Purple” has been a huge success nationwide and is coming to St. Louis starring Angie Stone and Vanessa Bell Armstrong! The Color Purple is coming to The Peabody Opera House for two big shows May 11th at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
“The Color Purple” is a 1982 epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker that won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction; later adapted into a film and musical of the same name “The Color Purple” was hugely successful as a novel, on screen and on Broadway.
The novel was adapted into a film of the same name in 1985. It was directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Danny Glover as Albert, and Oprah Winfrey as Sofia. Though nominated for 11 Academy Awards, it won none. This perceived snubbing ignited controversy because many critics considered it the best picture that year, including Roger Ebert.
Angie Stone is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter, record producer, and actress. She has been nominated for three Grammy Awards. She has been most successful on the R&B charts, with four Top 10 albums, including a number one album, and ten singles, including a Top 10. She has sold over 1.4 million albums in the U.S. and over 5 million albums worldwide.
Vanessa Bell Armstrong has been belting out R&B-flavored contemporary gospel since the '80s. Armstrong appeared on Broadway in 1991 in a production of Don't Get God Started. Vanessa Bell Armstrong made her solo debut on Onyx/Muscle Shoals Sound Records in 1983 with the album Peace Be Still. The title track has since become one of Armstrong's signature songs. Armstrong's second album Chosen hit number one on the US Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart.
